The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam was founded in 1991 with the aim of pursuing a consciously practice-oriented and interdisciplinary orientation that results in lively cooperation between various degree courses. These days, with around 350 employees and 3,800 students in five departments, the University enables a wide range of research activities in the disciplines of Stadt|Bau|Kultur, civil engineering, design, information sciences, and social and educational sciences. The departments are characterized by their particular focus on application orientation and specific research methods in all research areas anchored at the FH Potsdam.
Applied research is also expressed in research- and project-oriented learning formats. In order to connect research activities more closely with a perspective to current challenges of our society, the research profile has been continuously developed further in terms of disciplines as well as strengthened interdisciplinary. The increasing number of research projects – especially in the areas of urban futures, interaction design and information visualization – have formed the research focus «Digital Transformation — Urban Futures» in recent years.
The design department with its research laboratories and the associated R&D workshops are operating in this research area. Characteristic for the department is the close interlinking of its degree courses in Interface, Communication, and Product Design as well as European Media Studies – a cooperation project with the University of Potsdam. The networking enables a unique educational profile, which is visible in a variety of projects, exhibitions and collaborations. With its three research laboratories, the Interaction Design Lab (IDL), the Urban Complexity Lab (UCLAB) and the Mobility Design Lab (MDL), the Design Department is extremely active in the field of research and development. In addition to practice-oriented industrial projects, extensive research projects with scientific questions are also carried out.
In the field of «Human-Technology-Interaction for Digital Sovereignty», the Department of Design / IDL is involved in the joint project DataSkop. The Research activity lies on conception and development of innovative user interfaces and visualizations to promote digital sovereignty. The FH Potsdam is part of the DataSkop research network.
